Most hair type guides ask you to compare your hair against photographs, which is where the confusion starts — photographs are taken on wet hair, in good light, usually with product, on someone whose hair may not be behaving the way yours does today.

The reliable method uses one strand and takes about two minutes.

The two-minute test

  1. Wash your hair and use nothing afterwards. No conditioner left in, no cream, no gel. Product changes the pattern, which is the whole point of product.
  2. Let it air dry without touching it. No towel scrunching, no brushing, no diffuser. Manipulation while drying alters what you are trying to observe.
  3. Take one strand from the middle of your head — not the hairline, not the nape. Both of those are usually atypical.
  4. Look at its shape, then stretch it gently and let go.

What the strand does Type

Then narrow it down. The usual reference is the width of the loop:

  • Loose loops with movement, roughly sidewalk-chalk width3A

If you landed on type 4

  • Small, springy, clearly defined coils in a continuous S4A
  • Sharp bends and angles, more zigzag than spiral4B
  • Coils so tight there is little visible definition until you stretch it4C

Why your answer probably isn’t one type

Take strands from four places — crown, both sides, nape — and you will very likely get more than one answer. That is normal and it is not a sign you have done the test wrong.

Common patterns: looser at the crown where hair is newer and less weathered, tighter at the nape, and finer or more fragile at the hairline. Plenty of people are 3C through most of the head and 4A around the edges, or 4B on top and 4C underneath.

The practical approach is to identify your dominant pattern, use that as your starting point, and adapt for the sections that behave differently. Treating your whole head as its loosest section is how the tighter areas end up damaged.

The three things that matter more than your number

Curl type describes shape. It tells you very little about which products will work. These three properties do more of that work:

Porosity — how your hair takes in and holds water

Drop a clean, product-free strand in a glass of water and leave it a few minutes.

  • Floats — low porosity. The cuticle lies flat and resists water going in. Heavy products sit on top and never absorb. Lighter products, applied to damp hair, with warmth to help them penetrate, work better.
  • Sinks slowly, sits mid-glass — medium porosity. Generally the easiest to work with.
  • Sinks quickly — high porosity. Water goes in fast and leaves fast, often from damage or from genetics. The issue is retention, so sealing after moisturising matters more than the moisturiser itself.

This test is a rough indicator rather than a laboratory measurement — a strand with product residue on it will give you a misleading answer — but it is directionally useful.

Density — how much hair you have

Not the same as thickness, though the two get used interchangeably. Density is strands per square inch. Part your dry hair and look at how easily you can see scalp: barely visible means high density, clearly visible means low. This determines how full your hair looks and how much product it needs.

Strand width — how thick each individual hair is

Roll a single strand between your fingers. If you can barely feel it, it is fine. If it feels distinctly textured, it is coarse. Fine and coarse 4C hair need genuinely different handling, and the type number tells you nothing about which you have.

What the typing system does not tell you

It does not tell you whether your hair is healthy. It does not tell you why your hair is changing. And it does not tell you whether hair loss is happening — which matters, because thinning at the hairline is easy to mistake for a section that has always been finer.

If your edges are receding, particularly if you regularly wear braids, weaves, cornrows or tight ponytails, that is worth investigating rather than typing. What hair type do I have?

Wash your hair, use no product, let it air dry untouched, then look at a single strand from the middle of your head. Straight is type 1, a loose S is type 2, distinct loops are type 3, and tight coils or sharp bends are type 4. The a/b/c letter narrows it by how tight the pattern is.

Can I have more than one hair type?

Yes, and most people do. Curl pattern commonly varies across the head — often looser at the crown and tighter at the nape or hairline. Identify your dominant pattern and adapt for the sections that differ.

How do I test my hair porosity?

Place a clean, product-free strand in a glass of water for a few minutes. Floating suggests low porosity, sinking slowly suggests medium, and sinking quickly suggests high. It is a rough indicator rather than a precise measurement, and product residue will skew the result.

Is hair type the same as hair texture?

No. Hair type refers to curl pattern. Texture usually refers to the width of an individual strand — fine, medium or coarse. You can have fine 4C hair or coarse 4C hair, and they behave differently.

Why does my hair type seem to change?

Curl pattern is largely genetic but can shift with hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause, with some medications, and with damage. Heat and chemical processing can permanently loosen or destroy the pattern in affected strands.[2]

Does knowing my hair type tell me which products to buy?

Less than you would expect. Porosity, density and strand width influence product choice more than curl pattern does. Two people with the same type can need entirely different routines.

What is still unknown

These are gaps in the published research, not gaps in our reading of it. Each one is either stated as unresolved by a paper we have read, or recorded in our register as something we looked for and could not find.

  • How common traction alopecia is in school-age girls. A widely repeated figure of 22% could not be traced to a primary study: the population studies we read report 17.1% in girls aged 6-21, while 22.6% is the overall adult prevalence in a separate study.No source we have read answers this, so we publish no figure for it.
