3C is the tightest of the curly types — dense, springy corkscrews packed closely together — and it lives on one of the most contested borders in hair typing. Half the people reading about are actually asking a different question: is my hair 3C or 4A? So let’s deal with that early.

The anatomy of a 3C curl
The visible curl is only half of it. In tightly curled hair the part below the skin follows the same shape, so the follicle sits curved rather than straight.
That curve is built into the follicle itself — it persists even in hair grown in culture, away from any styling. For a transplant it is the whole point: extraction has to follow the curve rather than pull against it, or the follicle is cut. The studies behind this.
What 3C hair actually is
3C strands form tight, well-defined corkscrews, roughly the circumference of a pencil or a drinking straw. The curls are smaller and more tightly wound than 3B ringlets, and they pack densely — 3C hair typically has a lot of visible volume, with curls springing in slightly different directions rather than falling in uniform ropes.
It holds definition readily when wet, and how much it keeps when dry depends heavily on moisture and technique — more so than the looser type 3 patterns.
3C or 4A? The honest answer
3C sits at the end of the curly range and the start of the coily one. Many people genuinely have both 3C and 4A.

The usual distinction: 3C forms corkscrews that still clearly read as curls, while 4A coils are smaller, tighter, and closer to a coil than a curl. 3C generally shows more sheen because a looser bend lets light reflect more evenly along the strand; 4A tends to shrink more.
But the boundary is genuinely soft, and a very large number of people sit across it — 3C through the mid-lengths, 4A at the crown or edges, or hair that behaves like 3C freshly styled and like 4A three days later. If that is you, nothing is wrong with your test. Read both pages, take what applies, and stop trying to force a single answer the system was never precise enough to give.
What 3C hair does well
Definition is the headline. 3C curls clump and spiral with relatively little coaxing, wash-and-gos are usually viable, and set styles — twist-outs, braid-outs — come out crisp. Volume is enormous when that is what you want.
The trade-offs are the same physics as every tight pattern, just one notch gentler than type 4.
Where it struggles
- Dryness, especially at the ends. Scalp oil travels poorly down a corkscrew, so the oldest part of each strand gets the least. Dry ends on 3C hair are structural, not a sign you are doing something wrong.
- Frizz as a default state. The curl pattern lifts the cuticle more than a straight shaft does, and ambient humidity does the rest. Frizz control on 3C hair is about moisture and sealing, not about fighting the hair.
- Breakage at the bends. Every turn in the spiral is a mechanically weaker point. 3C hair snaps at the curve, usually during dry detangling or rough handling.
- Meaningful shrinkage. Less than type 4, but enough that dry 3C hair sits well short of its true length. Measure stretched if you are tracking growth.
Common mistakes with 3C hair
Brushing it dry
Dry brushing breaks curls at the bends and turns definition into frizz. Detangle wet, with conditioner or a product with slip, from the ends upward.
Washing too often with strong shampoo
3C hair rarely gets oily at the ends — the oil never makes it that far. Frequent stripping shampoo removes what little natural lubrication the lengths receive. Many people with 3C hair do better spacing washes out and using gentler cleansers, with the occasional clarifying wash when product builds up.
Applying product to dry hair and expecting definition
3C definition is set while the hair is wet. Product applied to dry hair sits on the surface. If a style has collapsed, re-wetting and re-setting beats layering more product on top.
Ignoring the difference between sections
If your crown is looser and your edges are tighter — common — a routine built entirely for the loosest section will underserve the rest. The tighter sections need more moisture and gentler handling.
Tension, edges and hair loss
3C hair is often worn in braids, twists, buns and sleek styles that pull the hairline taut. The edges are usually the finest, most fragile hair on the head, and they are the first casualty of sustained tension.

3C sits outside the range the surgical studies describe — they were done on tightly curled hair, at the 4B to 4C end. The principle carries over, in that the more a follicle curves beneath the skin the more technique matters, but the percentages do not, and we have found no series that measures 3C separately. Why are my edges thinning if my hair is healthy?
Healthy lengths and receding edges usually point to tension, not overall hair health. Braids, buns and sleek styles pull hardest exactly where the hair is finest. If it stings when installed or leaves bumps, it is causing damage.
