4B is the type that breaks the pattern — literally. Where most curl types form loops, bends at sharp angles, closer to a Z than an S. That single structural difference explains most of what makes it behave the way it does.

The anatomy of a 4B curl
The visible curl is only half of it. In tightly curled hair the part below the skin follows the same shape, so the follicle sits curved rather than straight.
That curve is built into the follicle itself — it persists even in hair grown in culture, away from any styling. For a transplant it is the whole point: extraction has to follow the curve rather than pull against it, or the follicle is cut. The studies behind this.
What 4B hair actually is
4B strands change direction abruptly rather than curving. Instead of winding around an axis like a spring, they fold at angles, producing a zigzag along the length of the strand. The result is hair with a fluffy, cotton-like appearance and less visible curl definition than 4A, but usually more visible pattern than 4C.
The bends are tight enough that 4B hair often looks denser than it is. Volume comes from the angles holding strands apart from each other, not necessarily from having more hair.
How to tell 4B from its neighbours
The difference is not tightness alone — 4B changes direction at corners, while 4A curves continuously.

Pull one strand from clean, wet, product-free hair and look at its shape:
- Curves smoothly into a small, defined coil — that is 4A. The S shape is continuous.
- Bends at visible angles, like a series of sharp folds — that is 4B. The direction changes rather than curves.
- Coils so tightly you can barely see a shape until you stretch it — that is likely 4C.
The 4B/4C boundary is the one people find hardest, and honestly it is a soft boundary. Many heads carry both. If your hair has visible zigzag structure in some sections and dense undefined texture in others, you are not misreading it — that is simply what your hair is doing.
Why the angles matter more than the tightness
Every bend in a strand is a mechanical weak point. The cuticle — the protective outer layer — lifts slightly wherever the strand changes direction, and the strand is thinner and more exposed there.
In curl types that loop smoothly, that stress is distributed along a curve. In 4B hair, it concentrates at sharp corners. This is why 4B hair can feel thick and strong in the hand and still snap during detangling: the breaking happens at the folds, not along the straight sections between them.
The same structure produces two other well-known characteristics:
- It dries out from the ends up. Sebum cannot navigate a zigzag path easily, so the ends — the oldest and most weathered part of the strand — receive the least natural lubrication.
- It tangles at the angles. Bends catch on neighbouring bends. Shed hairs that would slide free of straighter hair stay locked in place, which is why 4B hair can accumulate tangles even when it hasn’t been manipulated.
Shrinkage
4B hair shrinks substantially — less than 4C typically, but enough that visible length routinely bears little relationship to actual length. Hair that reaches past the shoulders when stretched can sit as a compact shape when dry and unmanipulated.
Track growth on stretched hair. Judging progress from dry, shrunken hair is the fastest route to concluding your hair has stopped growing when it hasn’t.
Common mistakes with 4B hair
Detangling from the roots
Combing downward from the scalp drives every tangle toward the ends and compacts them into knots. Section the hair, start at the ends, work upward. It takes longer and costs far less hair.
Detangling dry
Dry 4B hair has little give. Water plus something with slip — conditioner, a detangler — reduces friction enough that strands slide past each other rather than snapping at the bends.
Expecting definition it may not give
4B hair does not usually produce the defined ringlets of type 3 hair, and pursuing that with product after product tends to end in frustration and buildup. Techniques that set a pattern — twist-outs, braid-outs, bantu knots, shingling — generally do more than any styling cream applied to hair left to its own devices.
Neglecting the ends
The ends are the oldest section of the strand, the driest, and the most tangled. They deserve the most product and the most careful handling, and they are usually the part people rush through.
Tension, edges and hair loss
4B hair is commonly worn in braids, twists, cornrows and weaves. Reducing daily manipulation genuinely does reduce breakage — but only if the style itself isn’t creating a different problem.

It is distinct from genetic thinning: it can appear in your twenties, it follows the pattern of where the tension sits rather than a Norwood pattern, and in early stages it can partly recover once the pulling stops.[1,2]
Signs worth acting on: stinging or soreness after a style is installed, small bumps along the hairline, and edges that look thinner in photographs six months apart. A style should not hurt. Pain during or after installation is the damage occurring, not the style settling.

Can I wear braids with 4B hair?
Yes, provided they are not installed under tension. Braids that pull at the hairline cause traction alopecia over time. If a style stings, aches, or leaves bumps along your edges, it is too tight regardless of how protective it is meant to be.
