Hair typing is the first thing most people learn about textured hair and the thing most often misunderstood. The 1–4 system with its a/b/c subdivisions is useful shorthand for describing curl shape. It is not a , it is not a care plan, and it was never meant to rank hair from good to bad — though plenty of people encountered it that way.
This guide explains what each type actually looks like, how to tell neighbouring types apart, and — more usefully — what the system leaves out.
The system in one paragraph
Type 1 is straight. Type 2 is wavy. Type 3 is curly, forming loops and spirals. Type 4 is coily, forming tight coils or sharp bends. The letters narrow it further: a is the loosest pattern within a type, b is tighter, c is tightest. So 3a is loose curls and 4c is the tightest pattern the system describes.

Three things the typing system gets wrong
1. Almost nobody is one type
It is normal to have looser hair at the crown and tighter hair at the nape, or 3c through the middle and 4a around the hairline. If you have spent time trying to decide whether you are “really” 3c or 4a, the honest answer may be that you are both, in different places. Most people type their dominant pattern and treat the rest accordingly.
2. Curl shape is not the most useful thing to know
Three properties affect your day-to-day results more than your letter and number:
- Porosity — how readily your hair takes in and holds moisture. This drives which products actually work on you.
- Density — how many strands you have per square inch. Often confused with thickness, and it is what determines how full your hair looks.
- Strand width — whether individual strands are fine, medium or coarse. Fine and coarse 4c hair behave very differently.
Two people can share a curl type and need completely different routines because of these.
3. It carries baggage the shapes don’t
The system is descriptive, but it entered popular use inside a culture that already treated looser curls as more desirable. That is worth naming, because it is why so many people ask which type is “best” or feel their type is a problem to be corrected. It is a description of shape. It is not a ranking.
What actually changes with tighter curl patterns
Moving from type 3 toward type 4, a few things reliably shift — and they are structural, not cosmetic.

Dryness
Sebum from the scalp travels easily down a straight shaft and struggles down a coiled one. The tighter the pattern, the less of that natural oil reaches the ends. Type 4 hair is not dry because it is neglected; it is dry because of its geometry.
Fragility
Every bend in a strand is a point where the cuticle lifts slightly and the strand is mechanically weaker. Tighter patterns have more bends per inch, so they have more of these points. This is why type 4 hair can feel strong and still snap during detangling — the vulnerability is at the turns.
Shrinkage
Coiled hair looks dramatically shorter than it is. Type 4 hair can appear a fraction of its stretched length, which routinely leads people to think their hair is not growing when it is growing normally. Length checks on stretched hair, not on a wash-and-go.
Where hair typing meets hair loss
This is the point where curl pattern stops being a styling question.
Tightly coiled hair is often worn in styles that pull — braids, cornrows, weaves, tight ponytails, locs under tension. Sustained pulling on the follicle causes traction alopeciaTraction alopecia Hair loss caused by sustained tension on the follicle, concentrated at the hairline and temples., and the scale of it is easy to underestimate: in a Cape Town population study of 874 African adults, it was found in 31.7% of the women examined.[1] It is genuinely different from genetic thinning: it concentrates along the hairline and temples, it can appear in your twenties, and in its early stages it can partly recover if the tension stops.
It is also frequently misread as ordinary thinning, which delays the one intervention that works early: taking the tension off. If your edges are receding and you regularly wear tight styles, that is worth investigating as tension damage before assuming it is genetic.

Frequently asked questions
Which hair type is the best?
None of them. The system describes curl shape, nothing else. Every type has its own strengths and its own maintenance realities.
Can my hair type change?
Curl pattern is largely genetic, but it can shift with hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause, with certain medications including some chemotherapy drugs, and with damage. Heat damage and chemical processing can loosen or destroy a curl pattern permanently in the affected strands.
Why do I have more than one hair type?
Because that is normal. Curl pattern commonly varies across the head, often looser at the crown and tighter at the nape or hairline. Type your dominant pattern and adapt where needed.
Is 4c hair harder to grow long?
It is not slower growing. It is more fragile at each bend and shrinks the most, so length is both harder to retain and harder to see. Retention, not growth rate, is usually the limiting factor.
Does hair type affect whether a hair transplant will work?
Curl pattern does not make you a poor candidate. It changes how the procedure has to be performed, because coiled follicles curve under the skin and require adapted . What determines candidacy is donor supply, the cause of your hair loss and whether it has stabilised.

- How common traction alopecia is in school-age girls. A widely repeated figure of 22% could not be traced to a primary study: the population studies we read report 17.1% in girls aged 6-21, while 22.6% is the overall adult prevalence in a separate study.No source we have read answers this, so we publish no figure for it.
