Your donor is a budget, not a fountain
A transplant moves hair from the back and sides to a thinning area — it does not grow new hair, and you only get one donor for life. Change the supply, the area, and the number of sessions, and watch the trade-off. This is a general model — it measures nothing about your own head, and it gives no graft number.
Only a safe share is taken; the donor keeps its reserve.
Why there is no graft number here. How much you can move depends on your own donor density, scalp laxity, loss pattern and how far your loss may still go — none of it knowable from a photo or a slider. That is measured in person, with the scalp under magnification. Any tool that hands you a graft count before anyone has looked at your head is guessing.
There is a number worth having, though, and it is not about you: a graft count is an area multiplied by a density. The graft module works that sum for any patch you draw — which is how you can judge a figure someone quotes you, without anyone pretending the figure came from your scalp.

It teaches the trade-off. It does not:

- tell you how many grafts you would need
- promise any coverage or result
- decide whether you are a candidate
- replace an in-person exam with a densitometer
What the donor zone is, and the asterisk on “permanent”
The band of hair at the back and sides of the head is used as the donor because hair growing there tends to resist the process that thins the top. That tendency is not a detail of the operation. It is the entire reason the operation works: hair moved from that band is expected to go on behaving the way it did before it was moved.
“Tends to” is doing real work in that sentence. The resistance is relative rather than absolute, and it does not come with a guarantee attached. Where loss is still advancing, the boundary of what can safely be taken moves with it — which is why a donor assessed at twenty-five is not the same donor at forty. The methodology page sets out where that boundary comes from, and where the published figures disagree with each other.
The supply is smaller than the industry tends to imply
There is a claim in wide circulation that textured hair arrives in denser groupings and therefore has more to give. is not denser than other hair types; measured density is lower. Trichoscopy in 122 South Africans of African ancestry gave a mean of 139 hairs per cm², and a study of 2,249 adults across 24 ethnic groups found the same direction.[1,2]
That matters here more than anywhere else on this site, because every figure downstream of it — how much can come out, how much can be covered, how many sessions are realistic — is calculated from an assumed starting supply. Begin with a number that flatters and everything after it is wrong in the same direction.
What overdrawing the budget actually looks like
The hair left behind in the donor still has a job to do: it has to cover the donor. This is the constraint people underestimate, and the reason is ordinary. A recipient area can be judged in a mirror. The back of your own head is judged by other people.
An over-harvested donor reads as see-through rather than bald — thin under bright light, obvious when the hair is worn short, and it does not recover. Extraction also leaves marks of its own regardless of how carefully it is done: is not scarless. Each punch takes the follicular melanocytes out with the graft, and the wound can heal as a small pale dot — reported as more visible in darker skin phototypes and with short hairstyles. The review that documents this grades it common but gives no incidence figure.[3,4]
Which is also why a clinic’s photographs are worth reading for what they leave out. A gallery cropped to the top of the head is showing you the half of the result that improved.
What is documented for Afro-textured hair, and what is not
The published limits on how much of a donor can safely be taken were not established on Afro-textured scalps. They are the best figures available, and they are cited in full on the methodology page, but they come from work that did not set out to answer this question for this hair. Presented to you as settled for your scalp, they are being stretched further than the record allows.
That gap is why the model above refuses to produce a graft number, and why it will go on refusing. A slider does not know your , your scalp laxity, your pattern of loss, or how much further that loss intends to travel.
Frequently asked questions
Does donor hair grow back after it has been taken?
No. A follicle removed from the donor is relocated rather than duplicated, and nothing grows in its place. That single fact is what makes a donor a budget rather than a renewable supply.
Is Afro-textured hair denser, so is there more of it to take?
No. Measured density is lower rather than higher. The idea that coiled hair grows in denser groupings is repeated constantly and does not survive measurement.
How many grafts can safely be taken from my donor?
Nobody can answer that from a photograph, a slider or a form, and that includes this page. It depends on your donor density, your scalp, your pattern of loss and how far that loss may still travel — all of which are assessed in person, with the scalp under magnification.
What does an over-harvested donor look like?
Thinning at the back and sides that shows under bright light and when the hair is cut short. It does not grow back, which is why the limit matters more than the does.
Why does this tool not give me a number?
Because a number produced without examining your scalp is a guess wearing the costume of a measurement. A clinic that hands you one before anyone has looked at your head is doing the same thing.
