What this does not mean
This tool describes one thing: the shape of the hair you can see. It cannot see, measure, or judge anything beneath your skin — so here is exactly what your result does not tell you.

- your donor density
- any hair-loss diagnosis
- whether you are a candidate for surgery
- your transection rate
- how difficult surgery would be
- how successful extraction would be
- the health of your hair
- whether you have any disease or condition
- your ethnicity
Most of all, it does not replace an in-person examination by a dermatologist or surgeon — that is where every real decision is made.
Why the visible pattern is worth knowing
A surgeon plans around the follicle — the living root below your skin. This tool can’t see that. What it can help you describe is the visible fibre: the curl or coil above the surface.
Those two are related. In tightly curled hair the follicle sits curved beneath the skin rather than straight, with a bent, golf-club-shaped bulb and an asymmetric root sheath. Because the fibre you can see grows from that follicle, its shape is a visible clue to a structure no one can see from the outside (source).
But a clue is not a measurement. The follicle beneath the skin may differ from what the surface suggests, and the only way to know is a hands-on assessment by someone qualified to give one. That gap — between the pattern you can see and the follicle you can’t — is the whole reason careful planning matters.

The typing system is a vocabulary, not a measurement
The 3A–4C scale is a naming convention. There is no instrument behind it, no calibration, and no reference sample held anywhere against which a head can be checked. Two experienced people can place the same scalp one step apart and neither of them is making a mistake, because there is nothing for them to be mistaken against.
We use it anyway, and the reason is unglamorous: it is the language people already speak. Someone searching for help with their hair types the letter, not a fibre measurement. A site that refused the vocabulary on principle would be more precise and less useful. The methodology page sets out where the system came from, why it is subjective, and which alternatives are actually measurable — including approaches built on the geometry of the fibre rather than on how a curl looks to somebody.
Curl is built into the follicle, not into ancestry
The letter describes a strand you can see. What produces that strand sits under the skin, and it is not a matter of who you are. The curvature is built into the follicle itself — it persists in hair grown in culture, and it tracks with curl pattern rather than with ethnic origin.[1,2,3]
That finding carries more weight than its length suggests, because it moves the question off identity and onto anatomy. In tightly curled hair the follicle sits curved beneath the skin rather than straight, with a bent, golf-club-shaped bulb and an asymmetric root sheath.[1,2] A curved follicle is a geometric problem for a straight instrument, and geometry is the same regardless of whose head it is in. The curvature model shows what a straight punch meets when it enters a curved follicle.
This is also why we describe the hair rather than the person. “” on this site is a description of fibre shape, and it is used because the surgical literature uses it. It is not a claim about anybody’s ancestry, and a pattern letter is not a proxy for one.
Why a letter does not decide a surgical plan
It would be convenient if the type determined the technique — if 4C meant one punch and 3B meant another. The published work does not support that arrangement. In a retrospective series of 64 patients of African descent, the mean rate was 3-6%, and scalp thickness and firmness affected it more than hair curliness did.[4]
So a clinic that plans from your letter is planning from a variable that has been examined and found not to be the deciding one. The questions that do decide it are duller and more specific: what punch, at what diameter, and what transection rate has this clinic actually measured on hair like yours. A letter cannot answer any of them.
What the letter is good for is the conversation. It gives you and a surgeon the same words for the thing in front of you, which is worth having — as long as neither of you mistakes the word for the measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 3A–4C scale scientific?
It is a naming convention rather than a measurement. It has no instrument, no calibration and no reference standard, so two careful people can place the same head one step apart without either being wrong. It is useful as shared language and should not be treated as data.
Does my curl pattern come from my ethnicity?
Curl is produced by the shape of the follicle, which is an anatomical feature rather than an ethnic one. Pattern varies widely within every population, and the fibre shape is what the surgical literature is describing when it uses the term Afro-textured.
Will my hair type tell a surgeon which technique to use?
No. Published work points to scalp characteristics rather than curl alone as what makes difficult. A plan built on a type letter is built on the wrong variable; ask instead about punch diameter and measured transection rate.
Does this assessment use a photograph or AI?
No. It asks about the hair you can see and touch, and it runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and no image is analysed.
What if I get a different answer on different days?
That is expected and it is not a fault in the test. Length, weathering, product and how recently hair was washed all change how a pattern reads, and most scalps carry more than one pattern anyway.
